In the second half of the 20th century, animalist themes were outside the main current of Polish art, so the artist's decision to focus almost exclusively on animals was a courageous choice. The presented selection of sculptures and drawings reveals sensitivity, excellent craftsmanship and a curiosity worthy of a naturalist; the artist consciously gave up realism in favor of synthetic forms while preserving anatomical precision and characteristic animal behaviors. Curators: Kalina Cukrowska (curator) Anna Szary (co-curator and coordinator) About the artist: Domicella Bożekowska (1927–2019) trained at a wood technology school in Jelenia Góra and studied at the Kraków and Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in the studios of Prof. Tadeusz Breyer and Prof. Marian Wnuk. After graduating in sculpture in 1953, she studied veterinary medicine at SGGW for two years; she taught herself botany and ecology. In 1967 she met Andrzej Goryński, with whom she organized exhibitions and activities for nature protection. In the early 1980s she emigrated to Germany; from the 1990s she divided her life between Darmstadt and Warsaw. Her works were presented in Poland and abroad.
