Not only images and sounds, but also the history of cinema and its technological changes are recorded on film stock — we invite you to discover it together! Join the series “The Material of Film. From the Reel” dedicated to exceptional analog film prints, their history and specific qualities. This curated selection presents chosen titles in their traditional, material form, allowing viewers not only to watch the film but also to experience its physical medium. Film stock — the material foundation of cinema — has accompanied the art of film since its birth. It was a medium subject to constant change, improvements and experiments. Subsequent decades brought new technological solutions: from special effects created without computers, through the popularization of color, to different widths and formats of film stock that affected both the aesthetic of the image and the way it was received. Every innovation was a response to the needs of cinema — an art that sought ever more precise and bold forms of expression. PROGRAM: 25 February | 18:00 — “Madam Minister Dances”, dir. Juliusz Gardan, 1937, 86 min. Prelecture: Grzegorz Rogowski. Description: The first Polish musical combining dialogue with sung numbers. The film is an example of the so-called modern comedy of the late ’30s, distinguished by visual innovation: futuristic sets, bold scenographic solutions and extravagant costumes. The action takes place in a fictional country where the young minister Zuzanna fights for public morality while hiding her feelings for an official; the situation is complicated by the arrival of her twin — a cabaret actress. The contemporary version of the film was created by combining two incomplete prints, which is an example of analog film reconstruction. 18 March — “Contempt”, dir. Jean-Luc Godard, 1963, 102 min. Prelecture: Paulina Kwiatkowska. 29 April — “Adventure on Mariensztat”, dir. Leonard Buczkowski, 1953, 93 min. The film is listed in the Polish Film Heritage List.
