Drawing from jazz, funk, electro, and jungle, he helped shape Manchester’s late ’80s sound, before pushing far beyond it. Alongside his work on the seminal Voodoo Ray released in 1988, Gerald was a founding member of 808 State, later pioneering jungle and drum & bass in the ’90s and exploring techno, ambient and experimental music long before they reached the mainstream.
