A journey from Homer and his hero Odysseus to Hanna Krall and her heroine Izolda, a Jewish woman who throughout the war performed deeds worthy of odyssean struggles to save her husband. Two great conflicts: one connected with humanity’s first war, the taking of Troy, and the other the result of World War II. What do all of these have to do with us today? Where would we like to return? What does our Hades look like? Where are the gods? Where is Pallas Athene, who so assiduously sought Odysseus’ prosperity? And the Holy Mother who protected Izolda? Have the gods also lost faith in the possibility of return, seeing the future and realising that the world has entered irreversible territory? We all live in fear and, isolated, cannot do anything about it. We tame it by mocking it. Homer celebrated Odysseus’ deeds by citing the songs of wandering aoids. Izolda’s story, which she thinks would make an excellent canvas for a Hollywood film, was published by Hanna Krall as 'Chasing the King of Hearts'. And what about the memory of us? Is it worth burdening anyone with it? Krzysztof Warlikowski builds a panorama of unexpected analogies. In a journey of free associations he guides us through surprising landscapes and constellations of characters, examining our readiness for another global human uproar, while also offering some tried-and-tested ways to survive.
