What Brings Children and Adolescents into Therapy? How loss of contact and a fragile sense of self serve as the fuel, data, and map for integration and healing Violet Oaklander, Ph.D., a world-renowned Gestalt therapist for children and adolescents, author, and trainer, often said there are only two reasons people come to therapy: difficulties making contact and a lack of a strong sense of self. During our two-day live meeting in Warsaw we will explore how issues related to contact and sense of self influence all aspects of Gestalt therapy with children, adolescents, and their parents. We will combine presentation, demonstration, small group work, and a creative projective process using drawings and picture cards. Participants will have an opportunity to return to and process some of their early life experiences so they can bring greater awareness and more self-support to their work with young clients. We will discuss the stages of the Oaklander Model therapeutic process, the basics of emotional identification and expression, how to effectively conduct the first session with children/adolescents and parents, and what it means to build an I-Thou relationship with young clients despite hierarchical differences related to age, size, education, and perceived status.
