Paweł Szamburski – SONUS LUX concert / audiovisual meditation SONUS LUX is the latest solo project by Paweł Szamburski – clarinetist, improviser and composer – positioned at the intersection of concert, spectacle and audiovisual experience. The starting point is the relationship between sound and light and the evolution of these two fundamental orders of human perception, which for thousands of years have shaped the way we listen, see and understand the world. Historical sources – from the Sumerian hymn to Nikkal, through the mantras of the Rigveda and the medieval Hymn from Oxyrhynchus, to references to the Baroque, Romanticism and 20th-century minimalism – do not serve here as reconstructions but as a pretext for an original interpretation. An important element of the concert are the contemporary clarinet techniques developed by Szamburski: extended articulations, sonorous timbres, work with breath and noise, which are the result of long-term searches and improvisational experiments. Szamburski processes quotations and musical gestures to create a coherent audiovisual narrative. He constructs a minimal stage space using various light sources: from spark, fire, plasma, incandescent light and laser, to the phenomenon of sonification of light – the process of converting light data into sound. Each stage here is rather a symbolic state than a specific era – a metaphorical record of experience, emotions and ways of listening to the world. Sonus Lux is an intimate tale about cultural universals that Paweł Szamburski has explored in his earlier projects ("Ceratitis Capitata", "Uroboros", "Tristis Diabolus") – about how sound and light, regardless of era or culture, order the spectrum of human experience.
