Every comics artist knows that good research is needed to create a work – but how to do it without making silly mistakes? It might seem that in the 21st century there are no problems acquiring knowledge and information, yet in the age of ubiquitous AI it’s easy to get lost. How to find your way in a world where chats and artificial intelligences lie and talk nonsense? In the workshop we will try to uncover the secrets of good research for comics (especially historical ones), learn how to use the knowledge gained in visual narration, and how not to be fooled by “intelligence.” About the instructor: Katarzyna „Panna N” Witerscheim – a Silesian, trained as a sociologist and graphic artist. Illustrator and comics author of works such as “Helena Wiktoria” and “Slavonica.” Winner of the Grand Prix at the 33rd International Festival of Comics and Games for the comic project “Heksa,” whose final form was nominated for the 18th Warsaw City Literary Award. She has collaborated with writers such as Kelly Thompson and Magdalena Visaggio on comics like “Jem and the Hollograms” and “Sex Death Revolution.” Her work mainly addresses mining and metallurgical Upper Silesia and the social transformations in that region over the years – the stories focus on emancipation and the culture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
