The nervous system is the communication and perception system of our body. It receives information, processes it and coordinates responses – enabling us to orient ourselves in the world, take action and stay in relation with our environment. It regulates tension and rest, vigilance and regeneration, movement and stillness. In the BMC® approach the nervous system is not merely a biological structure but a dynamic network of awareness and organization of experience. Through it we form the way we feel the body, interpret stimuli and organize movement. The nervous system shapes the quality of our presence – it influences tempo, clarity of perception, capacity to adapt and sense of safety. Contemporary approaches to nervous system regulation, including polyvagal theory, emphasize the importance of different autonomic states that affect our sense of safety, ability to relate, mobilization and regeneration. In somatic work we can learn to recognize these states in the body and support smooth transitions between them. By working with the nervous system through movement, touch and mindfulness, we can experience the body as a system capable of self‑regulation, learning and transformation. During the workshop we will explore: - Main aspects of the nervous system: - brain and spinal cord - peripheral nervous system - autonomic nervous system (sympathetic and parasympathetic) - the relationship between perception, movement and regulation - Distinguishing the quality of work of different parts of the nervous system through movement and touch - Initiating movement from the level of the nervous system – from perception to action - Exploring psychophysical states related to different modes of nervous system functioning – vigilance, mobilization, rest and integration We will approach the topic from different perspectives: - through movement and improvisation - through states and qualities of presence - through anatomy and physiology explored in experience This is a workshop about the nervous system as a system organizing experience – about perception, regulation and the body’s capacity to adapt.
